Language:
Catalan is spoken in northeastern Spain, in the Balearic Islands, in Andorra, and in a small part of France. All Valencians, Catalans and Balearics have the duty to know Catalan and the right to use it, as it is the co-official language along with Castilian. Historically it was the language of Catalonia, the region that includes Barcelona, but today its speakers extend down the Spanish coast as far as the province of Valencia and is spoken extensively in Oliva. Castilian is the official language of the whole of Spain. All Spaniards have the duty to know it and the right to use it. Declared the official language of Spain by Philip V in 1714, it is usually known as Spanish, a name that was already used in the Middle Ages in Castile, and frequently by the grammarians and authors of the 16th and 17th centuries.
